The Florida Keys Carrying Capacity Study was mandated because of our designation as an ?“area of critical concern.?” The purpose of the study is to determine the ability of our ecosystem to withstand all impacts of land development while addressing the economy, quality of life and community values and expectations.
The study is being done cooperatively by the Army Corps of Engineers, the Florida Department of Community Affairs and Monroe County. It will examine specific areas like potable water, hurricane evacuation, near-shore water quality, sea grasses, Key deer, etc.
It will affect future development of the Keys, including commercial and residential construction.
Residents are asked to share their knowledge and insight. You may do so by attending a workshop meeting to be held in October. The exact time and place will be announced in the next Newsletter, or the bulletin board and web site. You may also contact Andrea Norwood at (305) 296-5596.
