Ernie Nickels, Liz Alessi and I met Thursday morning 7/27/00
at 10:00 to discuss the cable trenching along Broadway Lane. The meeting went very well! We
looked at plans for the construction site and spoke with several
representatives including Paul Klock, the Tempe inspector and Robert Smith,
the communications contractor supervisor. They explained that while several
communication cables are being buried the city is installing extra conduits
for future projects including one to bury the overhead powerlines. They also
explained how they will bore under the landscape barriers. We expressed our
concerns about the work being done at night; they assured us no work can be
done at night in residential areas (and days are actually easier to schedule
than nights). We expressed our concerns about protecting the landscape
barriers; they assured us and all the landscaping will be "bored under or
trenched around". We expressed our concerns about the notification letter
that was sent to all the homes on Broadway Lane (the letter did not provide
a phone number to call with questions); the contractor assured us they will
re-send the letter with updated information and a phone number. We expressed
our concerns about the traffic restrictions on Broadway Lane during the
trenching; they assured us they will install "no parking" signs and have a
flagmen on duty to allow local traffic in and out during the trenching. The
longest traffic delay may be few minutes. Construction should begin early
August.
