Why Ballroom Dance?

Why Dance?
We understand there are many reasons why people don't dance... too little time, two left feet, too old, too unpartnered.

While these may seem like good reasons, there are better reasons to get out there.

Here are a bunch of good reasons to get out on the dance floor for your mental health:
It's fun. You've seen other people dance... you can do it too.
It builds confidence and self-esteem which will leave you standing taller.
It's a great way to meet new people in a comfortable setting.
It's a nice way to add romance and variety to your relationship.
If you like, you may get a chance to perform, i.e. be an exhibitionist. And, for your physical health, consider this:

Weight-Control. More than half the American population is at least 20 lbs. above their desired target weight. One-fifth of this group is obese by medical standards. Men's Health (10/99) reports that 5 minutes of social dancing can burn up to 31 calories. Add those 5 minutes up and you'll be getting rid of some extra flesh.
Youth. Physical activity may not be the fountain of youth, but it's the closest thing we have. (Sacramento Bee 12/99)
Great Exercise. Tired of boring aerobics classes. The Chicago Tribune (12/99 ) reported that Salsa and Swing dancing are comparable to an aerobic class. Dancing one hour of Salsa or Swing will burn 450 calories. One hour dancing is a lot more fun than an hour on the treadmill.
Fewer Bone Fractures. Believe it or not dancing will help strengthen your bones! This means fewer bone fractures. Most people are not concerned about osteoporosis.
Men think osteoporosis will never be a threat to them, young women don't think they have to worry about it, and the elderly think it's too late for them. They're wrong. Any exercise including dancing helps your bones acquire calcium to keep them strong and also benefits your heart and muscles. (Parade Magazine, 6/00)

1. Forever Young.

Dancing is tremendously beneficial in keeping us young. It retards the aging process immensely. It benefits our heart, cardiovascular system and increases our lung capacity.

Fact: The muscle exertion and breathing rates of dancers performing in one dance competition is equivalent to those of cyclists, swimmers and an Olympic-level 800-meter runner.

2. Strong Bones Lubricated Joints.

Dance aids in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, which is a major concern for woman, especially during post-menopause because of the significant drop in estrogen that occurs at this stage. A decrease in our estrogen levels is what stops calcium from being absorbed into our bones. Dance also keeps joints lubricated, which helps prevent arthritis.

3. Calorie Blaster.

Dance exercises our bodies to allow for increased circulation. It helps us burn those calories away, while improving our stamina. It is estimated that dance burns anywhere from 5 to 10 calories per minute depending on speed and intensity. For example, swing and mambo burn more calories than a slow waltz.
Ballroom dancing is a great teacher. . .
it teaches relationships necessary in close teamwork;
it teaches discipline through practice and routines;
it teaches an appreciation and further understanding of music's rhythm and temp;
it teaches economics and fluidity in movement;
it teaches poise and balance; it teaches self-confidence;
it teaches good dress and appearance.
it teaches a skill and ability that will be very useful all throughout life - in social situations, in business growth, and in offering a great exercise.
Physical Benefits . . .
Physically, the general conditioning that ballroom dancing provides will benefit you in many ways. If you practice regularly, you will build stamina equal to that of soccer players or runners. You will acquire far more lasting physical stamina than football or baseball players who "stop and start" rather than continuously move.

Another plus is that ballroom dancing will provide excellent physical condition without risk of injury inherent in most physical sports.

With dance, you will become involved with disciplines and movements that can instill innate knowledge of body dynamics and skills that may enhance your life in many ways. Mutually engaging in dance with a partner requires balance, synchronized and coordinated movement, and develops prime and usable body skills.

Mental Benefits . . .
Mentally you will find great satisfaction in the achievements afforded by dancing - whether as a "great dancer" in social situations, or participating in a hotly contested competition. Students are greatly drawn to competition endeavor. Unknown to most, dancing offers keen and top-grade competition in formation teams, team matches, and couple dancing.
Ballroom dance teams usually include top academic leaders of the school or college. They are attracted to ballroom dancing by both the physical and mental challenge. Ballroom dance clubs provide a great social network in a controlled environment that is free of smoking, alcohol, and drugs.

Ballroom dancing will stretch your thinking and the "do-it" abilities. As your dancing improves, the sense of achievement will build confidence and pride. The teamwork needed to dance with a partner, as well as with a formation team, is mutually stimulating to concentration and learning. Regardless of your age, dancing will be an excellent learning experience in discipline, achievement, assuredness, and self-confidence. These favoragle attributes then will transfer to other aspects of your life and this will provide even greater benefits in your future. When you dance you will enjoy it and thrive.

Social Benefits . . .
You will feel emotionally better when you find yourself more socially acceptable, which dancing will help. Socially, you will discover a new alliance with the opposite sex, an alliance built on courtesy, consideration, and mutual achievement.

As a good dancer you will find yourself much appreciated at social functions and always popular. This will build "social confidence."

Ballroom dancing, a valuable lifetime social skill, will provide much joy and be useful furing your entire life. It is a skill to be learned, practiced, used frequently, and treasured.

YOUR FIRST WEDDING DANCE

1ST WEDDING DANCE LESSONS Your Wedding Dance Creation

Origin of "The First Dance"

The wedding dance, also called the bridal waltz, is a symbol of the new beginning that is marriage.

The new couple, embraced in their union of love for all to witness, take their first steps as one.

They have promised to face, side-by-side and hand-in-hand, all that lays ahead. Sharing joys and adversities.

Their two paths have joined.

Traditionally a waltz because 3/4 tempo music and dance has the longest history (in western european culture), many other styles have recently become popular. Tango, foxtrot and quickstep are often presented or adapted, and even the upbeat, less formal latin and swing dances.

Now the choice of music, often contemporary popular music, will lead to the style of dance chosen.

The wedding dance also marks the end of formal proceedings, speeches and such, and the transition to the less formal, more upbeat celebration of the wedding day.

The new couple invite to join them, first their bridesmaids and groomsmen, and then all the guests as the reception blossoms to abandoned merry-making.

The success of this transition from empty to full dance floor often hinges on how comfortable the guests feel to come onto the floor. This in turn depends on how comfortable the bridal entourage feel and look as they are dancing.

The choice of wedding dance style and music has great potential to enhance (or detract from) this transition from formal seated inactivity to joyous, uninhibited movement and sound.

Those first steps as a couple, alone on the dance floor and under the gaze of family and friends, are naturally hesitant and perhaps even awkward.

Sadly this is more so nowadays with the decline in social partner dancing, and since neither partner may have any formal dance experience.

However like many an adversity, this is also a golden opportunity. In fact it does not take much dance experience or tuition to be a better dancer than today's average. This can be turned to powerful advantage.

With a few hours commitment we can replace that hesitancy and awkwardnes with a quiet confidence to look into each others eyes as you glide across the floor.
