Thanks to great weather and all the good folks that turned out to help or participate, the Deer Park Neighborhood Parade and Environmental Fair was fun for all. The parade included the Louisville Metro Police Bicycle Unit, Pack 43 Cub Scouts, Mr. Magic - Jeff Russ, St. William Catholic Church, Louisville Bicycle Club Recumbant Bicycles, Grand Marshall - Bob Hill, Squallis Puppeteers, Belknap Neighborhood Association and the giant Kroger Cart. Many spectators sat along Rutherford Avenue to watch as the parade headed to St. Francis of Assisi School for the Environmental Fair.
The Bluegrass group, Jawbones, provided music and the St. Francis of Assisi Committee on Conscience provided the food. Exhibitors showed us how to live more sustainably such as Commonwealth Computer Recycling showing us that computers can be recycled. Meredith Mader from the Assumption High School Environmental Concerns Committee showed us how to turn t-shirts into shopping bags. Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light taught us about energy use. Akash Gupta from the St. Xavier High School Environmental Club gave us an environmental quiz. The St. Francis of Assisi Environmental Concerns Committee showed us how to sort recyclables. Dr. Roger Salot turned wine bottles into drinking glasses. Art Club In The Highlands helped us make art by reusing things. The Louisville Nature Center gave us bird watching ?“binoculars?” and Cindy Baker of the Deer Park neighborhood fed us chocolate chip cookies from her sun oven. Door prizes, balloon animals, shaved ice, huge hotdogs and free cookies made for a wonderful day in the sun, celebrating the earth.
Thanks to all the volunteers that helped us make it happen and to the following sponsors: Buchenberger, Darst & Eggers, CPAs - Louisville?’s Green Accountants, Horton?’s Hardware/ Naturally Horton?’s, Kentucky Interfaith Power & Light and Metro Louisville Councilman Tom Owen. Thanks also to Fr. Lou Meiman and the people of St. Francis of Assisi for allowing us to use their facilities.
