Did you know that four out of every ten homes have a dog, but more than one-third of dog owners don?’t clean up after their pets? Research shows that up to 95% of fecal coliform bacteria in urban storm water comes from pet waste, which washes from the grass and flows into and contaminates lakes, ponds, creeks, bays, and beaches when it rains. When pet waste gets into our waterways, harmful bacteria can make people sick and can cause algae blooms that suffocate fish and other aquatic life. For environmental and hygienic reasons, everyone should clean up after his or her pets.
