Dilworth Chase

I can remember that it was about a year ago that there seemed to be a lot of involvement with our community. People seemed to really care about our neighborhood, & what was going on. I can?’t help but notice that I don?’t feel the same sense of ?“togetherness?” or ?“fight?” to get things done & to bring our community together. I never imagined that I would live in a neighborhood like Dilworth Chase; if you think about it, it?’s kind of sad. It does not feel like a community, we don?’t do things together as a neighborhood, we don?’t take the effort to get to know each other, it almost feels as if we don?’t even care about each other?…Where?’s the love? Aren?’t neighborhoods supposed to a close knit group of people that share the common goal of making the community a friendly, cohesive, well maintained, neighborly, pleasant place to live?

I would like to give thanks to the one person that I know that has truly tried to make Dilworth Chase a better place to live. She went above & beyond what a community leader should do for the betterment of our neighborhood. However she was met w/ opposition & resistance from others in our neighborhood, & things got a little crazy from time to time. Which I think is ridiculous, when she seems like the only person that really cared, & actually took action whenever she saw something wrong, or that needed to be addressed. It almost seems that due to the division in our community she has been less involved in her previous efforts to make Dilworth Chase a better place; which is ashamed especially since I do not see those that were against her doing anything to make Dilworth Chase a better community to live in. It almost seems as if some people in our neighborhood saw what she was doing, & wanted to be chiefs instead of Indians. Again I would like to commend her for her efforts, & let her know that some of us in the community recognize all that you have done for us, & even though we did not always agree; we realized why you were doing what you did. For those that were against her, where are you? I don?’t see you doing anything? When are we going to all come together & make Dilworth Chase a community? Look at our message board, it?’s been almost two months & no one has posted anything, that?’s ashamed. If we don?’t do something soon our neighborhood will become more distant, and uninvolved as the time passes. Again thank you to the one person that I have seen do more for our neighborhood than anyone else, & to those of you that wanted to be in charge so bad, where are you now?…What have you done lately? Our community is so uninvolved I don?’t even know if anyone logs into our website & actually read my comment.

Here's what's happened...

Dear Dilworth Resident,
I completely agree with your mssg. My family & I have been saddened as well since moving to Dilworth Chase in 2005. When we first moved in, it seemed that things were fairly nice - Now some homes are unkept, speeders fly up & down the streets, common areas are no longer attractive, property values have gone down, and it's very difficult to sell a home in Dilworth Chase. Something has definitely happened. Upon questioning some things with Tamiko (the only person I've ever seen trying to do anything positive in the neighborhood - kudos to Tamiko!), I was told that unfortunately approx 50% of the homes in our neighborhood are rentals, another 15 or so are in foreclosure; so that only leaves about 40% of ''actual residents'' who live in their homes & care about them. In my opinion, most renters (not all), but most, know that they'll only be in the house about 1 year or so before they move again, so they don't care what the yard looks like etc. They're thinking why should they spend money for a house that doesn't belong to them?...Unfortunately, this drives down property values & attracts folks that really don't care to meet anyone or keep the yards up etc. We will be moving to the Cornelius area in about 1 1/2 yrs, but we still try & keep our home & yard looking nice for the sake of the community. On the issue of ''speeders'', I'm very fond of Bobby Clyburne (Treasurer), I think he's a great person - his house & yard is immaculate; however, he has said that the Board does not have the monies to install speed humps to cut down on the wild drivers. He said they cost about $1800 each due to the fact that the city will not install them for free. I still don't understand why they can't purchase ''1 per year'' until they get them all?, or get the Charlotte Police to have someone sit on Garrison Rd now & then & start writing speeding tickets or warnings? But back to the subject at hand, it's a shame to be surrounded by such beautiful neighborhoods like Fountain Grove, Lexington & Claybrooke and have ours looking like the ''red-headed stepchild''.
In short, I feel your pain & agree with you, but I don't think anyone is going to do anything about it.
