TLDR; Each Homeowner is responsible for the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs on their property, abutting streets, sidewalks and alleys. Make sure all overhanging limbs are trimmed (14 feet clearance over street & 8 feet over sidewalks), debris is removed, and that trees and shrubs are not blocking access to the sidewalks and streets.

TREES ON YOUR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY

As long as you live in a home where all construction is done, no tree permit or coordination with the City Arborist is required for tree removal. A homeowner can prune or remove trees on your property but if you hire a contractor, they are required have a valid, city- issued Tree Maintenance License.

If you have a concern regarding a tree on your property, it is recommended to hire a private Certified Arborist for a consultation and required work. The City Arborist is unable to directly provide assessments for trees on private property. For trees or vegetation that may be a threat to public safety, please call 311.

Ball moss is not a parasite. It is a small plant called an epiphyte with flowers, seeds and small ‘tentacles’ or pseudo-roots that attach to a tree limb, tree trunk, electrical wire, concrete wall and other inorganic surfaces.

Most ball moss seen in neighborhoods is on dead and dying limbs in the interior of a tree canopy, where there is typically higher humidity and lower direct sunlight. If there is dense populations in a tree, consult with a Certified Arborist for pruning and treatment options.
