East 5th Av Streetscape Program

At the February 2003 ECCA meeting, the Columbus Neighborhood Design Assistance Center reported on the progress of the Streetscape Program. Members of the neighborhood meet with the design personnel to decide how the $150,000 would best serve the neighborhood. The following improvements are scheduled:
* Large Bus Shelter (North side of Fifth at Cassady)
* 3 Small Bus Shelters (North side Fifth & Rarig, South side Fifth at Cassady and Rarig)
* Business/Community Directories
* Bus Seating Areas
* Vacant Lot Screening (including 15 planting beds, and landscaping and maintenance in
the spring and fall)
* Trash receptacles (emptying will be done by the city or COTA)
The vacant lot screens are portable and can be used at other locations in the neighborhood if the vacant lots between Cassady and Gould on Fifth Avenue become a place of business or residence.
This is Phase I of the Streetscape Program with a possible $150,000 scheduled to be spent on streetscape improvements. As was reported in previous East Columbus Gateway newsletters, this is part of the 1.8 million dollars proposed to be used for Economic Opportunities, Neighborhood Life, Community Values and Cultural Life.
If you would like to know what is going on in your neighborhood and be a part of the decisions, please attend the ECCA meetings held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The meetings are held at the East Columbus Community Center, 2743 E. Fifth Av with parking available across the street.
Displays of the improvements with examples of the materials to be used will be placed in several places around the neighborhood. Please watch for these displays at churches, schools, Nick?’s Market, and the East Columbus Community Center.
