UPDATE Feb 2000 - Per Glen Dorsey, this project has been delayed due to additional permits and testing that must be done before the work can be performed.
May 1999 - Glen Dorsey, Storm water Utility Coordinator for Clark County spoke with us and answered many questions at our April meeting bringing us up to speed on the status of this water retention area.
This is an improvement project that will expand the existing wetlands to help reduce local flooding and improve water quality by naturally filtering contaminates with vegetation, evaporation, and sedimentation from the storm water that runs off nearby streets, rooftops, and driveways. This is located between NE 51st and NE 54th Streets and between the dead end streets of NE 53rd and NE 52nd Streets
Glen has attended a few meetings with handouts, maps, drawings, and pictures of this and other wetlands projects the county has improved. He told those at the April meeting that the plans are temporarily put on hold pending more study. He has requested input as to what we would like to see in this improvement project. The county is open to accommodating some requests from the neighborhood. Do we want it fenced? Do we want access to the site with a path? The consensus from the members attending the past few meetings seem to want it fenced with a pedestrian access for a path to enter the site to view the wetlands and its wildlife habitat. Glen has stated that this is viable but recommends it be limited access for both the benefit of the wildlife and to keep late night partiers from using the site.
We will be hearing more on this as we near summer. For more information contact Glen Dorsey at 397-6118, ext. 4094
