Get gas. Keep gas. You saw how fast a tropical depression can form and move in, with the appearance of Claudette this weekend. This storm will probably increase the gas prices, so you might want to fill up before that happens. Also, remember that in the event we have a major storm and loose electricity, we won't be able to pump gas until the power comes back on. Based on that, you might want to keep the cars as full as you can.
Now is the time -- before the "Oh-crap-here-it-comes" rush -- to stock up on batteries, flashlights, propane (you can always make that coffee on the bar-bee), plywood, first aid supplies, mosquito repellant, citronella candles, tiki torches, spare gas in cannisters, prescription refills, BAND AIDS/GAUZE/TAPE, canned goods, bottled water/bottles to hold water and extra guitar strings (you're gonna be bored . . .). Make room in the garage to store those garbage cans, bicycles, lumbar, plant pots/potted plants, four wheelers, etc., tp prevent them from blowing into somebody's window.
Check on your neighbor, especially elderly neighbors, to see if they have everything they need to be prepared, maybe give them a hand bringing in projectiles for storage, and see if they have special needs that you should be aware of to be able to assist them if needed. Add to their list emergency numbers (doctor, next of kin, etc) for both them and you -- they might need you to help them.
Get a land-line corded phone if you don't already have one. Without electricity, your cordless house phone won't operate.
