Student volunteers from Mr. Lee's GEOG 30 Field Methods class completed a recon test of field survey methods at the Manzanar National Historic Site in direct support of the Service Learning Options for the Geography classes and the Expo Neighbors-Manzanar NHS Public Land Corps (PLC) Grant.
Student volunteers performed beta tests of field procedures for the GPS survey of the perimeter fence and drainage intercepts, a longitudinal GPS survey of a drainage channel, and GPS survey of a historic road segment.
The main results of the beta test revealed several key points for refining the field survey procedures for the PLC. These improvements will make the PLC work scope more productive and also increase the effective expenditure of the PLC grant funds.
Note: A meeting will take place during the first 2 weeks of November with the NPS personnnel to initiate the Expo Neighbors Association-Santa Monica National Recreation Area PLC grant. This project involves trail maintenance surveys.
Students interested in participating in these projects should contact Patrick McCullough, (323) 731-0323, E-mail niteprss@pacbell.net for an application form and updated details.
