National Park Service (NPS) officials at Manzanar National Historic Site (NHS) confirmed an award of $18,000 Public Land Corps (PLC) grant for the Expo Ranger collaborative project to GPS survey features at Manzanar NHS.
Expo Rangers (a community youth group of Expo Neighbors Association) are mostly students aged 16-26. They will be paid $6.75/hour to do this work. In addition, they get:
1) on the job training using a Trimble GeoExplorer 3 GPS unit;
2) exposed to other fieldwork applicable to entry-level NPS jobs;
3) NPS career/job orientation;
4) transportation provided to and from the work site and the Expo neighborhood;
5) camping (you need to have a tent and sleeping bag);
6) meals provided;
7) abundant free air, starry skies, sunshine, natural scenery;
9) outdoor geography and environmental education lessons.
Interested youth (aged 16-26) may apply to become an Expo Ranger by contacting the Expo Neighbors Association. Applications should be received not later than June 14. Students will undergo some Basic Training in preparation for the more specific project training.
