On Nov 20-22, core ESSI team leaders (Alex Arboleda, Jim Hawkins, Tatsunori Ikeda, Gregory Lee, Saifon Lee, Patrick McCullough, Erika Rodriguez, Julie Slagle) and Manzanar Public Land Corps (PLC) grant partners (John Slaughter, Robert Clyde, Jamie Anderson) attended a Trimble certified GPS training class at NATHA (Neighbors Acting Together Helping All) facilities in Altadena.
Jim Lahm, Electronic Data Solutions, Portland, OR conducted the 3-day workshop. He was impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of the trainees. The workshop covered the basics of operating the Trimble GeoExplorerIII GPS (Global Positioning System) unit from basic preparatory set up (e.g. data dictionary, almanac) to practice field data collection and post processing. Lahm commented on the dedication of the participants to give up an entire weekend to get the training. Most of the other groups he trains refuse to schedule training on weekends. He was also impressed with the organization of the ESSI group both in coordination to prepare for the workshop and during the workshop.
The trainees will be responsible to ?“teach back?” GPS lessons to other Manzanar PLC participants. GPS (a satellite navigation and mapping tool) is currently being used at Manzanar to map tree locations, historic roads, and facilities features associated with the National Historic Site.
Field surveys will resume in Spring 2004. Under the terms of the PLC grant, students aged 16-24 are eligible for stipends of $6.75/hour when working and training in the program. The field survey program involves overnight camping, so participants should have a sleeping bag and tent. Transportation and meals are provided. Anyone interested in participating should go to the www.neighborhoodlink.com/la/eneg web page, download and complete the Expo Ranger application form and submit a completed IRS W-4 form.
