Still a Poor Corporate Neighbor

Posted in: Eastburn Acres
Since my previous message on this topic, nothing has changed in my and my neighbors' irritation with our misfortune in having Burger King border on our back yards. Oh, yes, one small thing did change. At my expense and inconvenience, I hired a chain link fence company to put up a short section of fence to try to cut off one of the huge ''short-cut'' openings at the end of the very-inadequate Burger King fencing. But the problem has now gone well beyond mere piles of trash at the fence line and stealthy tresspassers using our yard when we're not around.

My latest ''run-in'' with ''the B.K. experience'' happened the week before last. I saw three teen-aged boys trying to again use our yard as a short-cut by simply forcing their way through the bushes at the edge of my new fence extension. When I approached them and told them to stop, and that our yard is not a short-cut, they arrogantly challenged me, would not accept my claim that they were on my property and began cursing and physically threatening me. And they kept coming!

When I angrily approached them they backed off a short distance and threw their full BURGER KING drink cups at me and left, continuing their verbal threats. Later that afternoon, they came back and were even further into my yard when I stopped them. They repeated their threats and again threw their B.K. drinks at me. This time I chased them all the way to the YMCA's front parking lot where they managed to get away. Because of the tone of their intimidation, my wife kept our doors locked and wouldn't go into our yard for several days for fear that these thugs would seek ''revenge''. They still might! Until B.K.'s on-going poor behavior as a corporate neighbor over the last few years, we never had to live like this. And I refuse to let it continue!

I briefed my two neighbors on this incident and I called Gary Revis, our Association President to let him know what happened. We now repeat our plea to both Burger King and to the leadership of our Association - PLEASE force this irresponsible corporate neighbor to put an immediate end to this trespassing and intimidating abuse of us and our neighbors!

We continue to insist that a tall, FULL-LENGTH wooden stockade fence, directly alongside their drive-through lane, is the only real hope of preventing the kids who hang out in the B.K. parking lot from seeing into our yards and being tempted to tresspass. There must be no openings AT ALL to allow these people to continue breaking through!

We will be calling the police at each future event like this, even though the offenders are well gone by the time the police arrive. We CANNOT continue living like this! And B.K.'s feeble offer to clean up the trash (which they are not holding to) and to extend the existing inadequate chain link fence, is unacceptable. These ''punks'' climbed right over the existing fence when I began chasing them! And this fence permits full view into all of our yards.

We have raised this issue with the Association previously over the last two years. They have approached B.K. and we have called the police several times before - all to no avail.

This problem must now rank among the highest in priorities for our Civic Association, the local police and Burger King to begin correcting immediately!
