Spring officially arrives on March 20th, which means only one thing??EYARD WORK. But don't let the thought of yard work get you down. By taking steps now, you can have a beautiful green lawn in just a few short weeks.
Fertilize your lawn this month with a 16-4-8 or similar high nitrogen fertilizer at a rate of 1 pound or nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Approximately 25 percent of the nitrogen should be a slow-release type.
Apply a pre-emergence herbicide to the lawn, or use a weed-and-feed to control weed problems. Remember, maintaining a healthy lawn is the best weed control program.
Rake dead grass to allow new grass to grow. This will increase the effectiveness of fertilizers and pesticides applied to the lawn.
Repair dead or damaged spots in the lawn with sod, plugs, or seedlings. Keep your lawn watered well if the weather is dry.
This is also the month to begin mowing lawns. But remember, grass mowed too low has a short root system and is more easily damaged during dry weather.
