The City of Vancouver supports recycling with staff and resources. Everyone pays for recycling whether or not you chose to use it. Their website contains considerable useful information.
The State of Washington, through the Department of Ecology, supports recycling. Their site provides regulatory information as well as an extensive database of recycling resources. Because of our proximity to Oregon, the same type of sites are listed for Oregon.
The CREAM program, run by Clark County provides free recycling of PC's, Mac's, etc. Obsolete equipment is recycled to recover metals, etc. Repairable, more modern equipment is repaired and donated to the poor, etc. The services are free to residents of the City of Vancouver.
It is especially important to recycle computer monitors and old TV's because they contain lead a hazardous waste. It is unwise to try your own disassembly of these items as they contain both lead and high voltage components. PC parts however are also accepted, such as old video cards, motherboards, etc. The gold, silve and lead are recovered or usable parts put into other PC's for donation. This program provides work for prisoners.
Many building materials and paints can be reused. Usable building materials can be donated to or bought from places such as the ReBuilding Center in Portland (a non-profit organization), which also has a rebuilding company directory or you can pay a local recycler to turn it into wood chips.
