Does anyone here in EM own an HD antenna for their HDTV? We don't want to have to pay more money for a package that offers a lot of HD channels, few of which we will watch, but paying $40 or so from Best Buy for an D antenna to pick up some local HD signals would be nice. My friend in Montgomery has one and it picks up all the channels int he area nicely, but was wondering if anyone in the neighborhood had luck with them as well.

Local over-the-air HD TV signals will be received with the same traditional TV antennas that cover VHF and UHF. Most HD channels are UHF. Radio Shack has these antennas and they are cheap. Make sure that your TV set has an HD tuner built in. Many HD TV sets do not - they are just HD capable, and they can display HD, but they do not have the tuner.
