Many of you may be aware of a proposed Senior Housing project being considered for the land on the south side of Highland Rd. west of Ferguson Rd., between the trailer park and the Enchanted Hills Apartments. On Saturday, Feb. 28 some of us attended a Town Hall Meeting sponsored by the Ferguson Road Initiative (FRI), during which more information regarding the proposed development was shared. Following is a recap of that meeting.

Present at the meeting were City Councilmen Leo Chaney and Gary Griffith, as well as representatives from FRI and Southwest Housing (SWH), the developer who is proposing to build the Senior Housing community. If you are not familiar with the work of FRI, the group is dedicated to furthering the economic development of the Ferguson Road corridor to ensure a safe, beautiful and prosperous community. FRI has worked tirelessly with Councilmen Chaney and Griffith and the surrounding neighborhood associations to gather and disseminate information regarding this proposed development so that the communities affected can work together to control our destiny and to determine our desired future.

SWH?’s proposed Senior Housing project, Primrose at Highland, would be built on 8 acres of the 15-acre site that is currently for sale. The remaining 7 acres, along the back part of the site, would be designated as flood plane and landfill area. SWH would maintain ownership of these 7 acres as well, which will keep the land from being parceled out for development by any other parties.

The 15-acre site is currently zoned to allow multi-family development, which means that it is entirely feasible that a low income, 300-unit apartment complex could be built on the land. Because the land is privately owned, our community would have no voice in the matter if the landowner chose to sell to a developer with plans to build a multi-unit apartment complex. Such a development would have no restrictions on its residents, such as age, quality control, background screenings, etc. It could add approximately 600 cars on area roads, about 600 children to the already over-crowded area schools, become a heavy burden on our water and sewer systems, and other city services, and give the potential for overuse of our area parks and recreational facilities.
