In the area of improving the appearance of our neighborhood, we have started to clean up some of the bigger eyesores. The five or six vacant lots that were grossly neglected have been mowed regularly since last summer (Thank You, Nancy Winkler and Walt Root). Now it is time to work on some of the smaller problems. Unfortunately, the contractor who mows the vacant lots does not clean up the gutters when he?’s done mowing. (It?’s not in the contract, so don?’t ask). It takes me less than five minutes to clean up the gutter of the vacant lot across the street from me. Can you spare five minutes every 6-8 weeks? If you live near a vacant lot and are physically unable to clean the gutter, give me a call and I will find some help.

Next small problem ?– trash in the streets. When we?’re walking, Mary Ellen has me work off demerits by carrying a small plastic bag and picking up the stuff in the neighborhood. When we get home, she has me separate out the aluminum cans (see January?’s article on Recycling ) .

Bottom Line: The neighborhood in looking a lot better. If we all pitch in, we can make it nicer still.
