Forestry News

Aug 25, 1999

By the time you read this, the Mountain Pine Beetle will be
flying, or will fly very shortly. All preventative spraying
will have been completed and there is little to do other
than wait.

RECOGNITION OF NEWLY INFESTED THREES (LATE JULY - AUGUST):

Following the flight of MPB, you can check your Ponderosa or
Lodgepole pines to see if you have MPB infested trees by:

- Looking for pitch tubes on the trunk of your tree (base to
about 25 feet). The pitch tubes appear as cream or pinkish
colored masses resembling popcorn.

- Noticing sawdust in the cracks of the bark or at the base
of the tree resulting from MPB "burrowing."

If you have newly infested trees following this year's
flight, you will want to treat them prior to next summer
(preferably beginning in October). If you are unsure
whether you have an MPB problem, I would be happy to visit
your property to help identify any potential risks or
concerns - or you can call a professional tree/arborist
company for assistance.

To receive detailed information about MPB issues including
recognition and treatment, contact the Mountain Pine Beetle
Hotline at 303-271-5916.

WEED CONTROL INFORMATION:

Since accepting co-membership of the Forestry Chair, I have
been focusing exclusively on the MPB problem in our area at
the cost of providing weed control information. The main
reason for this is that I have little firsthand experience
or information about this issue.

If you have any information that might be of interest or
help, please feel free to forward it to me and I will try to
incorporate it into future articles.
