NOXIOUS WEEDS
Non-native noxious weeds are rapidly spreading throughout
the United States, including Jefferson County. Plants such
as leafy spurge, Canada thistle, musk thistle, Russian
knapweed, diffuse knapweed, and spotted knapweed are capable
of destroying native plant diversity and greatly diminishing
wildlife habitats. It is hard to imagine an innocent
looking green plant causing such destruction, but it's
happening in our own backyards.
Colorado has a noxious weed law that requires all
landowners, public and private, to control certain weeds on
the properties they own. The first step that people must
take in controlling these weeds is being able to identify
them. The Jefferson County Weed and Pest Management
Specialist has an information packet that contains color
photographs of the major noxious weeds of Jefferson County,
along with various management options that will allow you to
get rid of these plants. If you would like to receive one
of these free packets or need further information regarding
the weed and insect pests of Jefferson County, please call
