Year Round Neighborhood Block Party Ideas

May 16, 2008

Here are some ideas to get to know your neighbors and build lifelong friends.
Autumn Ideas: Chili Cook off, Last Chance Grill, Get-together, Football Season Kick-off Party
Winter Ideas: Wine Tasting Party, Tropical Theme Party, Xmas lighting party
Spring Ideas: Start of Grilling Season, Party Spring Fever Party
Summer Ideas: Summer Grill-off, Progressive Theme Party
Or any time of the year you can hold potluck suppers or lunches. These parties and get-togethers are not hard to do. Get a few neighbors to help with the details and have each neighbor bring a dish to pass. For block party applications contact City Clerk?’s Office, City Hall, 400 E. 1st St., DSM 283-4233 City web site at www.ci.des-moines.ia.us, (DEPARTMENTS), (CITY CLERK). If you plan to award prizes to kids or adults, you might consider an entry fee to help cover the costs. Also plan to supply table settings and non-alcoholic beverages to both kids and adults.
Think of a get together idea, plan it out and make it happen. You won't regret it. You will have a ton of fun and make stronger relationships with your neighbors. Go For It!! Note: Chili Cook off- The organization, Des Moines Neighbors (a coalition of 49 neighborhood associations), has a Chili Contest every fall. They invite residents from the neighborhoods to compete in a chili cook-off. This year we could have our own Chili super & contest beforehand and send the winner to that contest. Email or call with your thoughts.
