A restaurant for a porch party?

Posted in: Historic Kenwood
Hello,

First, I want to make a few things clear. I understand that there was a mistake made in the newsletter. A bar/restaurant was named as the host for the porch party in May, when Sue and I had already volunteered. No problem.
$#!+ happens. Kathy says we are still having it. They will have next month.

Second, I have no problem with the bar/restaurant. I have been there about four times and like it very much. It has been upgraded from what it was and will make a great addition to the neighborhood.

I do however have a problem with a bar/restaurant being the host for a porch party. The idea behind a porch party is to meet and greet ''your'' neighbors in a relaxed setting. We try to provide a place where first timers will feel welcome and to get a taste of what we feel is so special about Kenwood. You can learn about someone so much more here, than at a business meeting. It's also to ''share'' a meal and talk about the neighborhood or what projects you have for your house. It also serves to give encouragement to all who see the owners home, whatever stage of progress they are in. Yes, some curiosity is also satisfied.

A bar/restaurant cannot give this feeling or have this atmosphere. How would a new person feel, when they won't know whether a person is from Kenwood or not. The music in these place's is so loud that comfortable conversation is not easily done. How would the food be handled? I don't think there insurance would allow outside food to be brought in. It's just not a neighborly setting.

If members were more aware that we were short volunteers to host, I don't think we would have trouble getting them. You can't stand up and say to sign up after the meeting if you would like to host. You need to say that the next few months are open, who would like to host one. Then you wait a minute or two. I'm sure the members will come through.

If this bar/restaurant wants to have a ''Historic Kenwood'' night or make their place available to us for our ''after the meeting meetings'' that would be great. I just don't want to give the porch party when that can happen on any other night.

Yes, I take this personally. I helped to start the idea years ago here, after hearing it in another neighborhood. I just think it is one of the things that make our Historic Kenwood special. How many of you came from neighborhoods where you knew almost nobody. I can say I know probably over a hundred and not just their names. The ''porch'' parties are a big reason for that.

Sincerly,
Bill
