Hello, my fellow Historic Kenwoodians:
Just to let you know, there is a public hearing tonight (8/16/01) at 6:00 p.m. on the future of the St. Pete Pier. I believe the question is, do they bring in a new management group or not? The management group they are considering is a mall management group that manages typical generic ''mall'' types of malls, like the sprawling Brandon Towne Center. The question is: Do we want the mallification of the Pier, or do we want it to retain it's quaint character by retaining the current shops and businesses in there?
We have lots of malls in this country and they are all pretty much interchangeable. Seen one Gap, seen 'em all. But there is only one St. Pete Pier, with it's unique flavor, and that is what makes it special. Do we want to change that in favor of this group coming in?
Apparently, there are pro's and cons either way. You can learn more tonight at the hearing, or if you already know about the issue and know how you feel, why not go down there to speak your piece! Whichever way you come down on the issue, it is important for anyone who cares about this quintessential landmark of our city--the Pier. This is our Pier--let's take an active role in it's future!
