more on anarchy and revolution
Love to find someone who appreciates the era of the American Revolution! But first, to answer the remarks on anarchy and Kate's intention; any period of revolution; when people ''break the ties that bind them'', creates an era of chaos and anarchy. During our Revolution, we rebeled against the central government and each other. Approximately 1/3 of the colonists supported the central or British government. It was rebellion and civil war; anarchy. It wasn't ended until those marvelous ''fathers'' created and implemented the Constitution some years later. THEY WORKED TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON GOOD. I think that was what Kate was talkiing of; rebellion leads to anarchy. Lets skip that rebellious and anarchistic phase and all work together for the common good; the neighborhod.
Now just a couple of notes in the interst of history having nothing to do with the controversy. Yes the colonists were free and property owners, the criteria used in England for voting. 60-70% of the Americans had property thus the right to vote. Also it was control of direct taxation; colonists didn't challange centeral government on indirect taxes. (Tariffs etc) And my favorite; the British professional soldiers versu the farmers and merchants. It was a complete mismatch; less than 5% of the so called British professional soldiers had active combat or campaign experience. More than 60% of the Minute Men had direct combat experience and close to 40% of the regular militiamen had seen active service. (French and Indian War and normal, every year frontier patrol service. The Minute Men were combat ready national guardsmen who mustered weeklly and were deployed to the frontier a month or more every year. They were good. Some of the older ones had helped capture Louisburg!) Many of farmers and merchants had seen the elephant and fought well. Had not the British sent out a rescue force from the city that day, the Americans would have killed or captured the lot. The British were badly outclassed!
