Message from the President
The last meeting ws a success. The 2001/2002 Bylaws were voted and approved. Copies will be availble at the next meeting scheduled for November 29, 2001.
A few members had concerns that we would hold a couple of meetings and then the interest of the organization will vanish. I assure him that it will not happen. We are actively working together to improve the living conditions within our neighborhood and community. we are beginning to identify some of our neightbors concerns; we will be attending the Detroit Police Community meetings that are held every first Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the 9th Precinct to voice our concerns. This meeting is open to the general public. We ware working diligently to obtain signatures to request the alley closure, and we have placed phone calls to the Forestry Department with the City requesting that our trees on our street be trimmed back, so it can provide a little more light after dark. Just to reassure you, we are here to stay and with the assistance of everyone, we are going to make this organization strong and our neighborhood more safer.

CRIME PREVENTION
Test your "Street Smarts" IQ: Do you.......
*Jog or walk by yourself early in the morning or late at night when the streets are quiet and deserted?
*Stuff your purse with cash, keys, credit cards, checkbook - and then leave it wide open on a counter, your desk, the floor?
*Put your wallet in a jacket, which you then hang up or throw over a chair?
*Let your mind wander-thinking about your job, or all the things you have to do - when walking or driving?
*Think it's a waste of your time to lock your car when you'll be back in a few minutes?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you need to change a few habits. Even if you answered "no" and made a perfect score, read on. Spend a few minutes now to prevent trouble later.
BASIC STREET SENSE
*Wherever you are-stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings.
*Send the message that you're calm, confident, and know where you're going.
*Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave.
ON FOOT
*Stick to well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys.
*Don't flesh large amounts of cash or other temtping targets like expensive jewerly or clothing.
*Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket, not a back pocket.
*Try to use automated tellers machines in the daylight. Have your card in hand in don't approach the machine if you're uneasy about people nearby.
*Don't wear shoes or clothing that restrict your movement.
*Have your car or house keys in hand before you reach the door.
ON WHEELS
*Always roll up the windows and lock car doors, even if you're coming right back. Check inside and out before getting in.
*Avoid parking in isolated areas. Be especially alert in lots and underground parking garages.
*Don't pick up hitchikers.

CHRISTMAS TIP......Christmas is approaching. After the holiday we are left with all the boxes that our gifts arrived in. Don't place your box for your new television, CD player, computer on the curb side with trash. That just invites the thieves of the new toys that you have. Take the time and break the boxes down and place in the garage can or use the box to store household items.
