Early this morning I heard the rock pound-er working at the site of the new Wal-Mart Food Market, now being built, just behind McDonald's on Fant Drive. Work has been going on now for about a month and this week, Sept.,10th, 2014, walls to the new store started to go up. This location, of course is only two miles from their super center and is about one mile from three other modern grocery stores.
In the past Kroger was about a half mile from this location and they didn't make it. Early this year Food Lion closed it's store here in town for lack of profit. That building still sets empty and Bi-Lo has just closed it's store on the east side of town.
This brings to bear the question; can there be to much of a good thing? Is the dog-eat-dog-free-for-all in the business world something that is good for the community in general? Will this new store close down one or more of the existing stores? What will the presence of the new store do to our sense of community? It would be good to get your input and thoughts on this subject.
