The spirit of community is alive and well in the Old Fourth Ward as over 300 volunteers gathered for a quick breakfast and headed out to individual projects. The neighborhood garden received lots of TLC thanks to our friends at SAFECO Insuarnace - plenty of weeding, mulching and fresh annuals - its never looked better. Other crews tackled vancant lots, street cleaning and trash removal. It will take days for the city to remove all that was collected and bagged but the 'hood' is more presentable than ever thanks to the leadership of Fourth Ward Neighbors and the solid involvement of so many adjacent communities. The picnic following the cleanup was both a food and social event for all concerned -- plenty of home cooking. The surplus was shared with the community shelter. Special thanks again to Bruce Berman and the crowd from Metro Alloys for Chairing the event. Likewise, Shenitha Collier and Helene Mills for Co-Chairing the food committee
What a pleasure to work with all the folks at Operation Peace who teamed up with Project Hope to complete projects for the children and seniors. Parks were cleaned and gardens were renewed. Its great to work with such an organized bunch of folks.
Once recognized as the most desolate street in the neighborhood, the McGruder Street crowd rolled up their sleeves to not only cleanup the curbs and sidewalks but also planted annuals. Both 'ole timers' and new residents teamed up to demostrate that people really can make a difference.
