History of Fort Worth

Fort Worth Settled in 1849

Fort Worth, Texas, located on I35, 20 and 30 on the Clear Fork of the Trinity River in Central Tarrant County, was established Jan 1849 when US Army General William Jenkins Worth proposed a line of ten forts to mark the western Texas frontier. This line included the area from Eagle Pass to the convergance of the West Fort and Clear Fork of the Trinity River.

The fort was moved several times by Major Ripley Arnold after General Worth's death. The moves established Johnson Station. Finally, November1849, the camp was named Fort Worth on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. Pioneers begin settling the area, amoung them were George Farmer who opened the first store, Ephraim Daggett, George Terrell, Ed Terrell and Howard Peak.

When the army evacuated Fort Worth September 17, 1853 the settlers took possession of the site.
