Franklinton is the home of Mount Carmel's first medical facility in Central Ohio. The hospital was founded by Doctor William Hawkes, President of the Columbus College of Medicine, who donated funds and land for a hospital to be erected on West State Street. Unfortunately Doctor Hawkes died before the hospital was completed. Doctor John Hamilton took over the supervision of the project and invited Mother M. Angela and Sister M. Rufina Dunn, two sisters of the Holy Cross, to operate the four story red brick building on the corner of State Street and Souder Avenue. It contained 18 private rooms, two wards, an operating room, and an amphitheater to permit medical students to observe the surgeries. It was July 1886 when life was brought to Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel in memory of Doctor Hawkes and honoring Mary, the Mother of Christ.

The Mount Carmel West Campus is located just off Broad Street near the S.R.315 / I-70 Interchange in Franklinton. The structure occupies the site and the surrounding areas of the old Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel, which spans Souder Avenue and South Davis Avenue. The principal campus facility is a 510-bed tertiary care center and teaching hospital. Services include a Level II Trauma Center; heart, vascular, general surgery, maternity, gynecology, neurosurgery, neurology; medical, surgical and radiation oncology; orthopedics, bariatrics, epilepsy; inpatient rehabilitation center; critical care, women’s health, pulmonology, urology, emergency medicine, diabetes, wound care, outpatient imaging and lab, homecare, home infusion, home medical equipment, hospice; ambulatory and medical transport, minibus wheelchair; physical, occupational, speech, cardiac and pulmonary outpatient rehabilitation.

The campus also includes the Mount Carmel College of Nursing that was founded in 1903 as the Mount Carmel School of Nursing. A three year nursing educational program designation, received the distinction of being the only “single purpose” college of nursing in Ohio. In 1990 the school was certified by the Ohio Board of Regent, to award a four-year baccalaureate Nursing Degree.
