Trail Status & Closures

In the rainy season, trails are often closed to equestrians and bicycists, although they're nearly always open to hikers.  All trail users may wish to stay off the trails during days when the trails are closed to horses and bikes.  Portions of the trails at Bear are heavy clay.  It can be  slick when the trails are very wet.  Trail closure signs at the entrance to the trails indicate when trails are closed.

The phone number for the trails hotline is 408 355 2200, then push 7, then 2 for Bear.  This will provide the latest trail information.

As of right now, 5/29/2010 the dirt trails are open to all users.  I check the hotline daily and update this site when I note changes.  There are also signs indicating when trails are closed to bikes & horses at the trail entrances.  Trail use when the trails are closed is subject to ticketing by the rangers and the tickets are expensive - >$200 each.  Be warned......

The asphalt path known as the Martin Murphy trail is nearly always open to all users.  One or another of the dirt trails in the hills are occasionally closed to hikers, mostly for safety reasons.  They should be well marked and there are generally alternate trails available.
