YEAR AWARD
FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The Board of Directors of the nation’s oldest grassroots organization, Neighborhoods, USA (NUSA) is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2006 Neighborhood of the Year Awards Program. The Neighborhood of the Year Awards Program is a way for NUSA to recognize the outstanding work of neighborhood organizations from all across the United States, and to say "thank you" with a collective voice to the many dedicated people who are working hard to improve the quality of life in their own neighborhoods. This prestigious award recognizes neighborhoods that have demonstrated exemplary efforts in improving the quality of life for its neighborhood, residents, and municipalities. This will be the 21st consecutive year that NUSA’s Neighborhood of the Year Awards has been presented. These are the only national awards given on an on-going basis to neighborhood organizations for their self-help initiatives.
Neighborhoods, USA, the sponsoring organization for the awards program, is a national non-profit organization committed to building and strengthening neighborhood organizations. NUSA was created in 1975 to share information and experiences to build strong communities. NUSA also encourages networking and information sharing as a way to facilitate the development of partnerships between neighborhood organizations, government, and the private sector.
The 2006 Neighborhood of the Year Awards program will recognize exceptional accomplishments by neighborhood organizations during 2005. Finalists have been invited to make presentations at the 31st Conference on Neighborhood Concerns, to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, May 24 - 27, 2006. Awards will be announced as the highlight of the conference.
Awards will be given in three categories - 1) Physical Revitalization/Beautification in a Single Neighborhood; 2) Social Revitalization/Neighborliness in a Single Neighborhood; and 3) Multi-Neighborhood Project Partnerships. Judging will be based on the extent of self-help, innovation, grassroots participation and capacity building exhibited by the nominated organization. A distinguished panel of judges will hear presentations from the finalists in each of the above mentioned categories, and will then select a winner in each category. An overall Grand Prize Winner will also be selected
