Gateway Parade

Brief Gateway Area History

The 1950's marked the start of Fun-O-Rama

100 plus members now belong to the Gateway Area Business Association (GABA),a 100% volunteer organization.

In 1950, the Woodland Park Merchants Association was formed with 15 charter members. The purpose was to promote the area with services to the community.

One of the first activities was the organizing of a Parade in 1951. The neighborhood eagerly participated, with children riding decorated bicycles, high school bands playing their instruments and men wearing fake police uniforms (the Keystone Kops) arresting bystanders.

Another highlight was the appearance of the Senior and Junior Rose Festival courts.

The first Fun-O-Rama days were held in 1952, with a carnival used as a fund-raising event.

Fred Meyer Opened Gateway Shopping Center

In early 1954 construction of the Gateway Shopping Center began at NE 102 Avenue and NE Halsey. August 17th of that year marked the project's completion.

Founder and owner Fred Meyer had an arch built as part of the shopping center. He wanted the arch to demonstrate, in a highly visible and meaningful manner, the importance he felt for the future of the area.

In 1991 the arch was removed due to some deterioration of the structure.

But now in 2002 the arch continues to be symbolic of Gateway. The Gateway Arch seems to be taking on a life of its own. Several GABA members have said they will be incorporating the “arch” in their logo and promotions.

A new Sunrise for Gateway

Although Gateway may not be a “yuppie” area, GABA President Sanchez states "We want to be known as a “welcoming” area and the arch symbolizes that wish.

Adds Sanchez: "With the renewed vigor and energy in our area, we believe we are witnessing the SUNRISE of Gateway, rather than the sunset."
