Citizens of the Year Award

Annual GABA Award Shared by Two

Citizen of the Year:

GABA gives out many awards each year, but none are more prestigious than the “Citizen of the Year”. Last year GABA honored Jane Baker, a Gateway advocate and activist who recently died. She’ll be sorely missed.

Mary Doherty of MHCC

The Citizen of the Year represents a person who has given to the Gateway community. This year the honor is shared between two very qualified women: Mary Doherty and Carolyn Schell.
Mary has spent her professional life in community colleges. In 25 years at Yakima Valley Community College, Mary was instructor, counselor and administrator, focusing primarily on adults, transitioning from poverty to a self-sustaining economy. For the past four years at Mt. Hood Community College, Mary has served as the Dean of the Maywood Park Campus, including the Maywood Center, Workforce Connections and Steps to Success East. Mary is pleased to be overseeing the nation’s best Dislocated Worker Program, the leading
Welfare to Work Program in the country and local efforts to assist in immigrant and adult education. She is an enthusiastic volunteer with Gateway Urban Renewal development, GABA, Catholic Charities Board of Directors, Volunteer Corps Northwest Board of Directors and Peace and Justice Committee.

Carolyn Schell, Midland Library Manager

Carolyn Schell has been an employee of Multnomah County Library for over 30 years, starting as a Children’s Librarian and later moving into branch library management.

Over the years she’s worked in almost every branch in the County and we are fortunate that since 1991 she has been Branch Manager at our own Midland Library.

Carolyn says she “loves working in libraries and helping people connect to books and information.” She is a tireless volunteer for GABA, serving now as its Secretary and in 1998 and 1999 as its President.
