In an article published in the Arizona Republic on December 3, 2002, Elvia Diaz reports that our neighborhood may ?“finally get the law on their side?” regarding unregulated group homes.
The article goes on to state that our own City Councilman, Vice Mayor Claude Maddox, and Representative John Nelson plan to pursue ?“state legislation which target the unregulated homes?”.
Jeff Spellman was quoted in the article, and voiced his concern for our neighborhood. As most of you know, too many addicts, criminals, and sex offenders living in unregulated group homes is a tremendous burden for neighbors. The mere task of trying to remember the names and faces of the neighborhood sex offenders is just about impossible for any child or parent. Tougher laws which would prevent the saturation of unregulated group homes in any one neighborhood would help spread the burden.
Jeff Spellman is currently serving on a committee, commissioned by Claude Maddox, to study this issue which plagues our area.
These committee meetings are open to the public, so if you are interested in being notified of future meetings, please call Rep. Nelson?’s office at (602)542-5872.
Don?’t forget to let our councilman, Claude Maddox know how much we appreciate his continued efforts in this issue. He can be reached at (602)262-7446 or claudemaddox@phoenix.gov
