FIELD DAY 2007 by Mark Hayden, KF6DSA
The Glendora Emergency Response Communications group held its fourth annual ARRL Field Day on Saturday, July 23, 2007. Again this year we were at Horsethief Canyon Park in San Dimas, and operated from 11 am until about 5:30 pm that day.In all 21 hams were in attendance for all or part of the day and there were about 16 guests. The real surprise of the day was to have 12 Boy Scouts and their leaders arrive to work on their Radio Merit Badge with Jim, KG6TQT. Jim is a Scout commissioner for the Valle Del Sol District and had aptly advertised our Field Day to the Scouting community. The boys were a great help in setting up antenna masts, and they had a good time getting on the air.
Frank, KG6TQV did a fantastic job cooking for the participants, in fact he out did himself this year by arriving early and cooking up special breakfast burritos for the set-up crew! The noontime fare was equally good with hot dogs and burgers, and the evening chicken BBQ and Frank?’s special barbeque beans was out standing! Thanks Frank!
A BIG thanks to the hams who got on the air including: Ray KE6DOJ, Rob KE6YGF, Roy KG6RGD, Matt KD7YFT, Richard KG6TRD, Jim KG6TQT, Jim KI6CFM, Keith KG6TPU, Larry KE6EOL, and Kent KD6BOO.
We operated on 6 different bands this year, making contacts from Washington State to New York State and many places in between. We were fortunate that the 6 meter band opened up in the morning and over 20 contacts were made on that band. In all 97 contacts were logged and confirmed. Thanks to Azusa City Councilman Keith Hanks, KG6TPU for participating and advertising our Field Day on Cable TV. We earned an extra 200 bonus points! The total points submitted to the ARRL this year was 1344.
