Report, by Mark Hayden KF6DSA
Eleven GERC members participated in an antenna building workshop on Saturday, January 22 at the Pasadena City College Community Education Center in east Pasadena. Those participating were Roy KG6RGD, Jim KG6TQT, David KG6WEZ, Ray KE6DOJ, Andy W6LDS, Robin WB6LDS, Norbert KG6TPO, Jack KB6NEI, Mark KG6TQK, and Richard KG6TQJ, and Mark KF6DSA.
Hosted by Naomi Garcia, PCC Electronics Assembly instructor, and Mark Hayden, KF6DSA PCC/CEC Science and Math instructor and GERC Net Control, the particpants built 9 copper pipe J-pole antennas during the fast paced four hour workshop. Special thanks to Jerry and Lilia, CEC teacher assistants for making the event a success by setting up equipment and cleaning up.
The workshop began with the hams using an online computer program to calculate the lengths of component parts specific to the freqencis they wanted for their antennas. Then they measured and cut the copper pipe. Soldering copper pipe for the first time was an interesting experience for some of the hams, and soldering the S0239 connectors without melting them was a challenge for most.
Andy Johnston, W6LDS, provided his expert assistance to help the hams tune their antennas to as close to a 1.1 to 1 SWR as possible.
It is hoped that the hams will have their new antenas in operation soon!
