re: Granada News

The past year has been an exciting and productive time for our neighborhood. We received a Mayor?’s Neighborhood Matching grant in the fall of 1998 to relocate and refurbish lampposts on each of the entrance corners along San Jose Blvd. Through the hard work and generosity of our neighbors, we were able to increase the number of lampposts in this project from the original plan for four lampposts to a total of ten. Soon the electrical connections will be made to these lampposts and the San Jose Blvd portion of the lamppost restoration project will be completed.

In recognition of our efforts, we received the 1999 Jacksonville Historic Preservation Society Award for this project. Also, we were one of just three neighborhood projects featured in a special video shown recently at the Mayor?’s Neighborhood Summit conference. Another significant achievement during the past year was the installation of true pink concrete curbing on Alcazar where the city and JEA were doing some major repair work. Over the next year, we will be working to restore the pink curbing throughout the neighborhood, wherever possible.

As we move forward into the year 2000 we will continue our restoration efforts and make even greater progress. Some of our plans include:

 Continuing the Lamppost Restoration project. We will be receiving another Mayor?’s Neighborhood matching grant for 1999-2000. This grant will enable us to ensure that every street corner has at least one working lamppost and that every street has at least six lampposts lining the interior of the street.
 Restoring Pink Curbing. We will be working to restore pink curbing throughout the neighborhood.
 Evolving into a Historic Preservation group. Our Granada Neighborhood Association is in the process of evolving into the ?“Granada Preservation Society.?” This reflects our focus on restoring the unique and historically significant aspects of our neighborhood.
 Becoming a 501-c-3 organization. We will be filing the required paperwork to become a 501-c-3 (non-profit) organization.
 Establishing a neighborhood website. Within the next few weeks, we will have our own neighborhood website on the internet. The address will be http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/gps. If you have internet access, please check out the site. It should be ready by about September 1.

The year 2000 will be the 75th anniversary of our neighborhood. We can take great pride in the efforts of our neighbors to return our neighborhood to the status of ?“Granada ?– the Suburb Supreme.?”

To continue our efforts, we will need the continued support of all of our neighbors. To that end, please see the enclosed ?“Granada Preservation Society?” membership form with various levels of membership noted. Your generosity will help ensure the success of our restoration and preservation efforts.

Finally, for those neighbors who have existing lampposts that need repairs or replacement parts, please note that we will be having a meeting regarding obtaining replacement parts, ordering new lamp head fixtures, painting your lamppost or obtaining electrical service. If you want to attend this meeting, please fill out and return the enclosed form and plan to attend to the meeting at the date and time noted on the form.

Thanks for your continued support!
