10-32 rack screws

Posted in: Kentucky

Within the data center's organized labyrinth of server racks, a specific type of screw reigns supreme: the 10-32 rack screw. These unsung champions, named for their diameter (10) and thread quantity (32 threads per inch), are the front-runners for harboring most machines with IT equipment. Now the question of why they are so in vogue arises.

10-32 rack screws come in two main varieties: cage bolts and square head screws. (Cage bolt encompasses the square top screw variant.) The cage nuts and the cage screws are interrelated since they are at the same time in the pre-installed holes in the frame. The cage screws are one-angled screws used to fasten the cages. A screw that threads into the motor within the equipment and the nut drawing tight the cage, forms a lockable and locked hold. However, the square mesh screws have a squared head for a fast and neat setup around the flat-head tip of a screwdriver. This replaces cage nuts which usually would be put on the equipment to be designed threaded with threaded holes on which these screws directly thread.

The correct screw gauge for the 10-32 mounting ´´decides´´ by several factors. First, find the screw size which is the longest one that can be accommodated. This should provide a little planning slack to make it pass through the equipment easily and leave adequate space for any washers behind it. Along with this, the materials play a role. Through the use of steel, which is a superior imparting strength characteristic, and a black oxide covering that helps arrest corrosion, the paint tool is tough. Finally, ensure compatibility.
