The October 10 Courier-Journal has an article about Graymoor-Devondale resident Sean Higgins. He is named as one of the 10 recipients of the prestigious Bell Awards. These awards are given annually to noteworthy volunteers in the community.
Here?’s the article:
After moving several times since it was founded in 1949, Pitt Academy is now on Preston Highway, where it is stepping up efforts to spread the word about its program for students with special needs.
It's getting help from Sean Higgins, 47, of Graymoor-Devondale, who's on the board and who has recruited other volunteers to improve the school's information technology system.
It serves ''kids who are unique,'' Higgins said. ''They need a special school in order to thrive and learn life skills.''
Higgins, whose work at Pitt helped win him a WLKY Spirit of Louisville Foundation 2007 Bell Award, also coached a championship Special Olympics soccer team for older students at the school.
For the past three years, the school has occupied part of the former Guardian Angels school, and Higgins says it could accommodate up to double its current 53 students.
Principal Sherry Downey says Higgins ''has been instrumental in getting a lot of things for us.''
He also volunteers at the Cathedral of the Assumption's food kitchen and serves on the board and as a reader for Visually Impaired Preschool Services on Goldsmith Lane.
He worked until recently for Cisco Systems technology company but is now concentrating on his own import-export brokerage business, he said.
He and his wife, Lisa, and their children -- Brendan, 16, Riley, 15, and Bailey, 10 -- attend St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, and Higgins said his family helps with his volunteer work. Pitt also is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Louisville.
''We need to create awareness that ?… Pitt Academy is out there for our children,'' he said.
