FROM THE PREZ:

The Garden Tour was an overwhelming success due to good weather and all the capable folks who made it possible.
Congratulations to all who participated!

If you read Shelby Sun Times and the East Memphis section of the C/A, you will be aware of the good things that happen in neighborhoods such as ours. I recommend ?“The Neighborhood News?” distributed by The Center for Neighborhoods. The Center is a City of Memphis organization with which several GCA members are very familiar. The Center staff provides services to neighborhoods in a wide variety of ways. They are located at 619 North Seventh Street in a refurbished Victorian home. Their phone number is 526-6627. Your GCA President and a few others attend most of their meetings.

The East Police Precinct at 2602 Mt. Moriah 38115, 795-3131 is staffed by good
folks who perform duties such as ?“Neighborhood Watch?” and the ?“Police and Citizens Alliance?” or ?“PACA.?” The ?“NW?” Coordinator is a part-time employee of the MPD named Dot Rongey. The ?”PACA?” volunteers are Horace Smith, Bob Morgan and Robert Robinson. These gentlemen are usually available Monday through Friday. They will address crime prevention and quality of life issues within our community. Mark White and I attend their meetings. We obtained from PACA the brochure ?“Ten Common Code Violations?” which was included in your last Newsletter.

August 3, 2004. Location to be announced. but we can arrange our own meeting, if enough interest is shown.

* Tentative dates for remaining GCA meet-
ings of 2004 are September 13 ?– Executive Committee; and November 15 ?– General Meeting (to announce 2005 slate of Officers)

Finally, ?“Did You Know?”?…Contractors who provide tree cutting and trim services are required by City Ordinance to remove all materials generated by their services? And that?….Construction, demolition, and remodeling materials SHOULD NOT BE LEFT at the curb for City collection?

Removal of such materials is the responsibility of the home- owner. (Examples: scrap lumber, old fencing, broken glass, dirt, roofing, sheet-rock, bricks, rocks, etc. ) Keep in mind also that blowing grass clippings into the street can cause the storm drains to clog and overflow, as will bags of clippings placed in the gutter. Put them on the neutral strip.

The Committee express-
es its heartfelt thanks to all those who opened their gardens for viewing and to those who helped staff them and welcome our visitors. All of this helps to show that Greentrees is a choice place to live.

Special thanks to John Seabold for printing and to Kirk Dismukes for supplying balloons and helium. The $2,955 profit from the Tour will help toward expenses for Kirby Parkway and Holmes Park.

Our ?“Yard of the Month?” sign was taken from the yard of the June recipients. We are in the process of replacing the sign. It is awarded each month to the yard chosen by rotating committee members to encourage all Greentrees home owners to have the prettiest yard possible.

Two residents report items stolen: A compressor from 2101 Old Lake Pike; and a lawnmower from Max Stainbrook?’s yard, 2267 Hickory Crest Drive, last Saturday.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE IN THE AUGUST ELECTION!
LEFT TURN LIGHTS:

Russell Hill, who has done such an excellent job in seeing that Kirby Parkway is kept in its beautiful condition, reports that he has recently talked with the City of Memphis Traffic Engineer about the Left Turn signals at the important intersection of Kirby Parkway and Poplar Pike. The City of Memphis has responsibility for al1 traffic
within the city. The City of Germantown has recently done some important work on the arms which come down on the railroad tracks as trains approach, and in preparing proper Left-Turn lanes. The City Engineer stated to him that these signals should be place within the next three or four weeks. BULLETIN!The City Engineer is a man of his word! The signals are being installed as of today (June 30, 2004) Hurray!

Russell is also scheduling a work day for Kirby Parkway for Saturday, July 17th, from
8:00 A. M. to 10:00 A.M. Volunteers with the necessary pruning, cutting, and other
equipment should assemble on the Parkway at 8:00 A. M.

"VIOLATION -- WRONG SIGNAL SENT!
Your Editor, swept away by a wave of exultation upon seeing City of Memphis workmen at the intersection of Kirby Parkway and Old Poplar Pike July 2nd, incorrectly "ASSUMED" that they were working on the Left Turn Signals. Wrong! We have to fall back on the City Engineer's statement to Russell Hill that the work would be completed within the next three to four weeks. Sorry for my misplaced enthusiasm."
