Atturbury/ Lyman Bird & Animal Sanctuary News

January4, 2011

located @ 8280 E. Escalante Rd (east of Santa Rita HS)
We have had a busy season in the Sanctuary. We hosted an Urban Forestry Workshop several weeks ago. 12 new trees were planted in areas that needed them, much of the work done by area youths and neighborhood volunteers (before and during). The trees were provided through the Tucson Audubon Society. They have a carbon buy-back program. We are co-joiners in a WHARF grant to revitalize the sanctuary area. This includes work in the wash area to redirect some of the water flow and meet a goal of planting 1000 tress in the sanctuary area.  We are planning on another workshop in the spring and will keep you informed of the date. They are always fun, not a lot of work when there are many to participate, and you always will learn something new. The Sanctuary always will still need 988 trees, we still need to focus on the area denuded by that big fire several years ago. And what a wonderful feeling to know that you have added to the living beauty project right in our own area.
Nesting season is beginning so start watching for our feathered winter visitors. If you see something new or unusual, let us know and we can post a "sighting notice" on the kiosk.

Our Sanctuary bobcat has had kits so enjoy them but please do not ry to feed them or entice them to you. This is their home and we need to respect that they are wild animals. THEY WILL NOT ATTACK YOU. Actually, they are probably more afraid of you than you are of them.

Please see the discussions area - we need help with funding.
