Now that the new year is under way, there are a few security items that I would like to discuss. First is the parking issue. Even though I have addressed the issue numerous times it is still a problem. It is understandable that there will be times when circumstances dictate that you park on the street, but what I have been seeing are empty driveways and several vehicles on the street. Please make every possible attempt to park in the driveway when you can. Remember also that if you live on a cul-de-sac, you still must park legally. I notice that at the end of most of our cul-de-sacs streets, vehicles are pulling straight into the curb to park. I realize that this is a dead end street and traffic will be lighter but there is still traffic that moves up and down the street. When there are several vehicles pulled into the curb it makes turning difficult. You must be considerate of your neighbors who have a hard time backing out of their driveway because a vehicle is illegally parked on the street. We had an incident several weeks ago in which a fire truck in route to a fire in the neighborhood was unable to turn around in one of the cul-de-sac streets due to several vehicles parked into the curb and on the street. Several minutes were lost when the truck had to back out of the street to get back out. After receiving a call from the chief of the department, I checked on the particular street. What I found was that most of the driveways were totally empty.

The second issue concerns the electric and gas scooters that are running up and down the streets lately. Laws are currently being reviewed by the attorney general?’s office at this time concerning this matter. For the time being, certain types of these scooters are legal to be ridden on the streets. This does not mean that they can be operated on the street unsafely. I have noticed that some of the younger children are riding the scooters in a very unsafe manner. I have stopped several of the kids and talked with them about safety and the proper way to operate them. Parents, you should not let your children ride theses scooters unattended, especially the younger kids. This is an accident waiting to happen. In most cases if not all, the younger children have no idea how to handle the scooters. I have seen them run through intersections without looking, running stop signs and basically not paying attention to their surroundings. I do not want to see one of our children hurt because they were left unattended to ride their scooter around the neighborhood. Please keep an eye out for them.
