Water Selling at Intersections

Notification to District Seven Residents from MPD

As the weather has warmed up, you may have noticed an increase in young men and women selling bottled water at the major intersections of the district.  Generally the children will stand in the median and ask drivers if they want to buy the water.  Many times the children will walk in traffic or hold up traffic when the light changes from red to green. There has been some confusion as to whether the children can sell from these make shift stands.

Per city ordinance 74-1-2.5, selling food, including water and soda from a median or safety island is prohibited.  Adults could receive a citation for $160.00 and juveniles can receive a citation for $73.00.  The water sellers could also be fined for standing or loitering in the roadway.  If you see this activity you are encouraged to call the non-emergency number of 933-4444 and report what you observed, so that a squad car can be sent out to investigate the situation.  The only safe way to sell these products is from the curb, allowing drivers to safely pull over or park and get out of the car to make a purchase.
