The Colonial Acres Google Group and its Crime Watch email service went officially online as of Monday, April 27, 2009.
The invitation below was sent to those who have provided their email addresses to Colonial Acres Neighborhood Association, Memphis.
If you want to join our Google Group and did not receive the invitation this morning, send an email to CANA Safety ( canasafety@gmail.com ) . Please provide your name address and phone number. Your Google Group membership will allow you to share crime watch emails directly with your neighbors who are also members of our Google Group, using one email address - colonial-acres@googlegroups.com .

Colonial Acres Neighbors and Friends,
You're receiving this note to let you know that you have been invited to join the Colonial Acres Google Group, the new official email service (newsgroup) of the Colonial Acres Neighborhood Association (CANA). To join, just email your name, address and phone number to canasafety@gmail.com . The primary purpose of the group is to keep each other informed via email of crimes, suspicious activities, suspicious persons, etc. in our area. Please feel free to use it for that purpose.
How it works
Once you're a Colonial Acres Google Group member and have something to report, when you send an email to this group address: colonial-acres@googlegroups.com, you will be emailing each member of the group (presently around 125 neighbors). By hitting "Reply" to an email received from this address, your reply will go to everyone in the group. Please keep this in mind and don't reply using that address if you do not intend for everyone to receive what you send. Be sure to change the subject line if you are beginning a new topic of discussion.
Group policy
This email service is for reporting crimes, suspicious activities, suspicious persons etc. It IS NOT for advertisements, product or business endorsements, political candidate or issue discussions, complaints, etc. It IS for the friendly exchange of useful information to help keep our neighborhood safer. Reporting lost and found pets is ok. Messages related to personal safety tips, crime trends in our area, and related factual information is ok. We will also use it to relay official communications and alerts from the Memphis Police and Shelby County Sheriff.
Important Information
Security
Only those people approved for membership in the group will receive email from or be able to send email to members using colonial-acres@googlegroups.com . Only group members will be able to see any content on the Colonial Acres Google Group site (See Features for Advanced Users below.) In other words, this is a private list; the general public cannot view any information.
Adding new members
If a neighbor wants to join the Google Group, they can email the request to canasafety@gmail.com . To join, a person must provide their name, address and phone number. This information will be kept confidential, used only for official CANA use, and will not be shared with any other email list or persons.
Violators
Anyone who abuses the service by sending advertisements, political discussions, hateful, or otherwise offensive emails will be deleted from the group. They will no longer be able to send email to or receive email from the group or read any content on our Google Group site. This policy will be strictly enforced.
Helpful Tips
* USE COMMON SENSE: This is the most important advice for using this system.
* Keep emails factual: As much as possible, provide complete descriptions of the crimes, suspicious activities, persons or vehicles, including time of day, vehicle make and model, license plate number, etc.
* Be courteous: We are neighbors helping neighbors.
* Be brief: Keep it short for everyone's benefit.
Features for Advanced Users - Using our Google Group Web Site
The Colonial Acres Google Group includes a new web site with these sections: Discussions, Pages and Files. To use the site, you will have to set up a Google account if you don't already have one. You may use your existing email address to set up your Google account, just create a password. Please email canasafety@gmail.com with questions or concerns. Since we may receive quite a few emails with questions as we get started, please be patient. We will respond as soon as possible and share any common concerns and answers with the group.
