How We Came To Be

As I was standing on my porch one hot summer afternoon, I wondered why cars wanted to cut corners and make a shortcut through this street to get to Martin Luther King Blvd. from W.W.White Road. My children and the neighbors children were playing in the street in front of my house, and I realized how dangerous it was to let them play unsupervised, as cars raced through the street. Right then I wanted to talk to someone in charge, to see how I could help. My house sits in the middle of the street, and I felt trapped. So, I went out and met the neighbors close to me, and their neighbors just to find out that no one was in charge, but everyone felt the same way I felt. I am a social worker, I believe since birth, and I want to save the world, imagine that! so when no one was in charge I sent a notice to the neighborhood to see if more people were interested in participating in enhancing the neighborhood and got a good response. Even the people in the other street participated, and were willing to work hard, and we figured we had the ideal neighborhood, naturally marked from Martin Luther King to the North, W.W.White Road to the East, Rice Road to the South and the Salado Creek to the West. So, the Mighty Mouse was born. We worked hard and teamed up and the Association was born. Yes, the official name is kind of long, and we don't really use it, only officially, but everyone around us knows we are the Hein-Orchard Neighborhood Association. It has been 5 years long, and a lot of hard work, but we have come a looong way and I would not change it. We have just started to make a difference, but it shows. We have the best combination of owners and neighbors that care for each other and want to come live in our streets, good commercial neighbors that are commited in keeping crime down and are hardworking people and I am sure we will succeed. Just watch us this time next year! Welcome, neighbors.
