Metro Police Officer Geoff Odom says inThe Watchful Eye:
Many of us spend a great deal of time in one of two places: Home/Work. All of us want to feel safe in the place where we live and there are many helpful tips to make "home" a safer place. Remember to replace the smaller screws holding your front, rear, and garage door strike plates onto the frame with longer three-inch screws. Use motion lights for your front porch and driveway to help in warding off would-be thieves. If you have an alarm, use it. Cut back trees/shrubs that may be blocking the view of your windows and allowing a burglar a place to hide. If you don't have deadbolt locks, buy and install them. Check fire alarms regularly. Don's place space heaters near flammable items or onto flammable surfaces. If you use a kerosene or gas heater, get a carbon monoxide detector.
