What to Do About Unwanted Solicitors

Oct 04, 2001

Now that our neighborhood is well-established, there have been many reports of peddlers without permits. In some reports, unwanted solicitors were knocking on doors at late hours of the night or looked to be "just hanging about."

The City of Pearland has an ordinance against this kind of activity. To control the number of house-to-house peddlers, the City requires that the company apply for permit to conduct such business. In this way, we can be assured that the company is legitimate by a quick viewing of this permit. In addition, a sign openly in view on your front porch which says "No Solicitation" prohibits any kind of such activity--permit or not.

When a peddler knocks on your door, ask him to produce a "solicitation permit." If he doesn't have one, send the solicitor on his way with a brief reminder that he is in direct violation of City Ordinance. Then quickly note any descriptive data (i.e. physical description, license plate number) and report it to Pearland Police Department.

If you have a "No Solicitation" sign posted on your porch, the solicitor is likewise in violation of city ordinance. This also warrants a phone call to the police.

ALWAYS report suspicious activity in your neighborhood, even if you think it's harmless. Call 911 and ask for Pearland Police, or call Pearland Police directly at 281/652-1100.

Let's keep our neighborhood safe!!
