Do you have problems in your neighborhood? We may be able to help! We are the Code Enforcement Branch, a branch of the Property Safety Division. We enforce three ordinances of the Jacksonville Municipal Code, the Jacksonville Housing Safety Code (Chapter 518), the Property Maintenance Code (Chapter 520) and the Unsafe Buildings and Structures Code (Chapter 548).

CODE ENFORCEMENT BOARDS
City Council approved increasing the number of Municipal Code Enforcement Boards from two to six, providing a separate board to serve each neighborhood planning district. The changes are part of Mayor John Delaney's efforts to fight urban blight and decay and concentrate code enforcement efforts in neighborhoods.

HOUSING SAFETY CODE
The Housing Safety Code requires that all residential structures be maintained at a certain level. It covers violations both inside and outside the structure from excessive trash and junk in the yard to obstructed sewer lines and improper plumbing or electric installations. Violations of this Ordinance can be cited to the property owner or the occupant, and after time is allowed for correction, may be filed with the Municipal Code Enforcement Board for prosecution or be cited with a fine through the Citation System.

THE PROPERTY MAINTENANCE CODE
The Property Maintenance Code requires that all commercial properties be maintained at a certain level. Commercial properties are defined as any property except a single family residential structure. Violations of this Ordinance cover anything from exterior paint to improper plumbing and electric in the interior of the structure. Violations of the Ordinance can be cited to the property owner or the occupant, and after time is allowed for corection, may be filed with the Municipal Code Enforcement Board for prosecution or be cited with a fine through the Citation System.

UNSAFE BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES
The Unsafe Buildings and Structures Ordinance covers any structure which is structurally unsound and unsafe because of standing vacant, open and unguarded. Violations of this Ordinance can be cited to the property owner or the occupant, and after time is allowed for correction, may be filed with the Municipal Code Enforcement Board for prosecution or be cited with a fine through the Citation System. If necessary, the City may take action to demolish the structure or to have the structure made safe by boarding up the openings.

NUISANCE LOTS
Complaints regarding high grass, trash or debris on vacant lots and occupied structures should be called in or e-mailed to Code Enforcement.

ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL
Animal Care and Control Complaint System covers emergencies and accidents such as animal bites, mistreatment of animals and animals that have been hit by cars. Other valid complaints include loose animals and other disturbances in neighborhoods.
Animal Care and Control Adoptions can be arranged in person at 2580 West First Street, Jacksonville, Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
