?“We?” should ..(but not me!)
By HPNA President Rachel Cywinski
Last year several persons suggested we march in the Martin Luther King March in the future. The response from questionnaires turned in during the January meeting was in favor of marching.
Several persons signed up but when it came down to it, all were either disabled or marching with other groups.
There was a time when I would have tried to take the banner with me alone. But I have learned a few things over the years:
* No one should represent a group alone.
* People do the things that are most important to them.
* Lack of effort does not mean the goal is bad.
* Achieving the goal in a different way still achieves the goal.
The HPNA members who marched with other groups still marched and represented their beliefs.
For many months now members have been expressing their concerns for developing Cellular on Patrol and maintaining the semiannual cleanups. But the persons who want Cellular on Patrol do not do it themselves, and Ramon Quintero sometimes has no volunteers until a few of us realize he is directing traffic alone. This will not happen again, or the event will be cancelled.
In this issue is the form to sign up for Cellular on Patrol. If it?’s important to you, then sign up. We need ten persons for a class. There have been a lot of myths about Cellular on Patrol but the reality is our only obligation is to take 8 hours training and then WE decide what hours (if any) we want to volunteer; there is no obligation.
Another thing I have learned is:
* Sometimes to achieve a goal we just have to find more persons sharing the goal and communicate with them.
March 1 volunteers from Keep San Antonio Beautiful will assist Ramon Quintero and Ron Segovia with the Highland Park Cleanup.
But your community needs YOU too!
Do you have something to say?
Here is YOUR chance to be heard!

Holiday Decorations contest wrapup
During the January meeting, Diane Cortez explained her proposal that the money given to holiday decorations winners be used instead to decorate the James Bode Community Center.
The 2002 contest winners who were presented expressed their approval of the idea. Their consensus, which was supported by the members present, was that the holiday decorations contest should continue but the winners should not be awarded cash prizes. The winners expressed a desire for contest winners to be recognized but stated, ?“The money was not important.?” There was a strong agreement that money should be spent to decorate the Bode Center instead, with non-monetary recognition given to holiday decorations contest winners.
